Attractions:Montmorillon is a beautiful historic town with the river Gartempe meandering through it and many chapels and churches to explore. Archaeological remains suggest it has been occupied since pre-historic times. The charming medieval centre has been restored “ Cité de l’Ecrit ” [“city of writing”] and it is well worth wandering around the streets looking into the book and calligraphy shops, or sitting having a drink and watch the world go by. Market day [Wednesday] is a good day to visit the town, because the sleepy town seems to wake up. All the facilities you could wish for are in Montmorillon: restaurants, cafés, tea rooms, shops, supermarkets, banks, post office, doctors, pharmacies and more. We are in the Poitou Charentes area, in the charming Vienne region of France, which has medieval towns, pretty villages, chateaux, fields of sunflowers and maize, large rivers and valleys, woodlands, an abundance of wildlife and of course gourmet food. There are some beautiful walks locally, which have distinctive signs and maps, from the tourist office, to follow. There are lakes and rivers that have man made beaches for swimming, as well as fishing, kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing and sailing. There are many other outdoor pursuits: horse riding, golf, bungee jumping, micro lighting, 4x4 off roading and motor racing. There are many places to see: from amazing architecture at L’Abbaye de St Savin and the relaxing square it is in; to Angles sur l’Anglin with it’s ruined fortress on the hill and the pretty village with antique shops, restaurants and cafés and then there is Vienne’s historic and vibrant Poitiers with good restaurants, sightseeing and shopping, which is under an hours drive. Some attractions for the whole family are: Futuroscope; Valley of the Monkeys “Vallée des Singes”; The beautiful flower Gardens “Parc Floral de la Belle”; Snake Island “Isle aux Serpents”; The Giants of the Sky “les Géants du Ciel” displays of birds of prey in a ruined castle and the bicycle rail “Velo Rail”.
DirectionsYou can also fly to Poitiers [50 minutes drive] and Limoges [1hour and 10 minutes] with RyanAir. It is easy to book a hire car before and collect from the airport.
Or you could go by Eurotunnel or the ferries Brittany Ferries, LD Lines, P&O, and Sea France.
Then there is always the train Eurostar, then Paris to Poitiers on the high speed train [TGV] “SNCF”and then the local train to Montmorillon.
From Montmorillon, take the road to Saulgé [D5], past the train station, go under the bridge and La Brasserie is the 1st road on the left [there is a Chambres d'Hôtes sign]. Our house is opposite the mill, facing the river.
